Adams County man facing multiple felonies following jail attack

    An Adams County man incarcerated at the Adams County Detention Center is facing serious charges following an incident that occurred there Sept. 23.
    According to an affidavit released by Adams County Prosecutor Jeremy Brown, Dylan J. Teeple, 26, Bryant, is facing felony charges of aggravated battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, strangulation and five counts of battery resulting in moderate bodily injury.
    The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m. Sept. 23 when Officer Karen Douglas was passing meals to the inmates at the ACDC. Douglas reportedly heard a noise coming from the A pod section of the facility, and entered the area to find Lucas G. Smith sitting on the floor.
    According to the affidavit, Smith was covered in blood and Douglas observed Teeple walking away from Smith.
    Adams County Sheriff's Department Detective Gary A. Burkhart said he was contacted to investigate how Smith was injured, according to court documents. Because the jail has video recording devices, he was able to retrieve the video of the area Smith and Teeple were in.
    The recording reportedly revealed inmates receiving their meal trays and sitting at tables. Smith was sitting at a table near the bunks and Teeple was in the bunk area. The video then allegedly shows Teeple approach Smith from behind and choke him by wrapping his arm around Smith’s neck and securing it with his other hand.
    The video then allegedly shows Teeple pulling Smith to the floor and wrapping his legs around Smith’s body and continuing to strangle him. Smith lost consciousness, at which point Teeple allegedly rolled him over, face down.
    As Smith was unconscious, Teeple allegedly continued to straddle Smith and punched both sides of his face multiple times, according to the affidavit.
    Teeple then allegedly stood up and grabbed the unconscious Smith by the hair and dragged him across the pod to the bathroom area. Teeple pulled Smith by the hair to a cinderblock wall where he allegedly slammed the unconscious man's head into the wall.
    According to court documents, Teeple allegedly kicked Smith in the head, punched him four times, kneed him twice, then kicked him once more before other inmates in the pod stopped the attack.
    Smith suffered multiple injuries, including multiple lacerations and was treated at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    An explanation of each charge is as follows:
    • One aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony, as Teeple allegedly intentionally inflicted injury on Smith, slamming his head against a cinderblock, which created a substantial risk of death;
    • Count two, battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony, as Teeple allegedly intentionally touched Smith in a rude, insolent or angry manner by choking him, resulting in serious bodily injury, which caused Smith to go unconscious;
    • Count three, strangulation, a Level 6 felony, as Teeple allegedly in a rude, insolent or angry manner intentionally applied pressure to the throat or neck of Smith, impeding normal breathing or blood circulation; and
    • Counts four through eight — battery resulting in moderate bodily injury — all Level 6 felonies, as Teeple intentionally touched Smith in a rude, insolent or angry manner by striking Smith in the face causing moderate bodily hard.
    Teeple now has an additional bond of $975 cash and $52,500 surety due to the new charges.
