Two children were killed and four people were seriously injured in a vehicle-buggy crash Tuesday just before 8 a.m.
The Adams County Sheriff's Department reported that Chandler M. Gerber, 21, of Bluffton, was traveling east on U.S. 124 near 400 E when he struck an Amish buggy driven by Mary M. Schwartz, 44, of Decatur.
Gerber told investigators the sun was reflecting off the roadway making it difficult to see, and that he was using his cell phone to text message a family member when the crash occurred, the report said.
He also stated that he was traveling approximately 60 mph at the time of the accident,and investigators could find no sign he had applied his brakes prior to the accident, according to the report.
Killed in the crash were Enos M. Schwartz, 3, and Barbara M. Schwartz, 5, both of Decatur, who were ejected from the buggy upon impact.
Two of the injured victims were airlifted by Parkview Samaritan and Lutheran helicopters and taken to Fort Wayne, while three were transferred by ambulance to Adams Memorial Hospital, where one victim was pronounced dead. The remaining two were transferred to Fort Wayne by ambulance.
Injured in the crash were Michael M. Schwartz, 16; newborn Susan M. Schwartz; Jerry M. Schwartz, 17; and Mary M. Schwartz, 44, all of Decatur.
Jerry Schwartz was listed in critical condition this morning, while Mary Schwartz was listed in critical but stable condition; Susan and Michael Schwartz were treated and released, according to a spokesman for Parkview Hospital.
Gerber was not injured in the accident.
Adams County Sheriff's continue to investigate this accident and updates will follow as more information is released, the report said.
