Bellmont hit the gas early, pounding out a 62-22 win over North Side in a non-conference tilt Tuesday night in high school girls basketball.
The seventh-ranked Squaws (16-1) quickly put the game on ice building a 17-2 lead after one quarter. The host Redskins (5-12) couldn’t mount a challenging.
They struggling to no more than 9 points in any given period.
Meghan Busick scored 21 to lead all scorers. Her night included three shots from behind the arc.
Morgan Shifferly added 11 points. In just three quarters of play,
Grace Hunter finished with 6 points. Every Squaw player saw playing time.
Despite a 40 point victory Bellmont coach Andy Heim said the Squaws still had few things to work on.
“We probably had to many turnovers. We forced the ball and we didn’t put our hands on passes we should have caught,” he said. “But other than that we got in and out of our defenses well. On offense our moment was good. We got good looks.”
He also wants more physical play inside on the offensive and defense boards - to post up.”
The game was filled with unique challenges. It was rare mid-week game, that pushed them out of their routine.
According to Heim, “the girls handled it well. You have to play the opponents on the schedule and North Side always comes with a unique gym atmosphere. I thought we did a nice job.”
The win sets up a Northeast 8 showdown Saturday with No. 2 Norwell - both sit atop the conference at 4-0.
Heim wasn’t about to be distracted.
He used the game to work in new wrinkles for a lethal Norwell team.
One area is the use of hand signals. That is to communicate without shooting across that court.
A ploy to make it more difficult for a seasoned, experience team to predict plays.
“We want to keep Norwell guessing. You can’t practice that in practice. It’s much more difficult. But, we’ve got to run a clean game no matter who we are playing.”
“We have to do different things. North Side does a handful of things that Norwell does, just not as well.”
