The birth of golf in Decatur

70 years ago this month, Decatur Golf Course opened for business. The original nine was built beginning in 1948 by Robert Bruce Harris of Chicago.
In 1990 the second nine was added in a design by George Young. At the time, Mr. Young was a professor at Ball State University. A third nine was eventually added using some preexisting holes and five new green complexes and fairways.
The original nine holes are now divided between the Championship 18 and the Executive 9. They have been named the Biggs/Kreigh 18 and the Majorki 9.
The first change I can remember to the original design, was the new green that Luke Majorki built for number 2 on the Northeast corner of the property across the street from the Hanna Nuttman ball park.
