Clothing for Sioux sought

The Wassenberg Art Center, 214 S. Washington St., Van Wert, is collecting new and clean used coats, hats and gloves for residents of the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota this holiday season.
According to a press release from Executive Director Hope Wallace, “Pine Ridge is made up primarily of the Lakota (Sioux) nation and its inhabitants endure unspeakable hardships such as extreme poverty, 80 percent unemployment, high infant mortality rates and shortened lifespans. The reservation experienced several deaths last year due to soaring propane costs and extreme temperatures.”
Area residents can bring new or clean, used-condition coats, hats, scarves and gloves to the art center before Dec. 18 and they will be distributed to the reservation.
