“High hands!” and “Active hands!” are two common sideline instructions called out by Adams Central head coach Aaron McClure as his Flying Jets play defense.
In two of the team’s three wins this season, the 3-3 Jets’ strong pressure “D” led to wins: against Woodlan (51-50) and this past Tuesday at Parkway (50-32). McClure later praised his squad’s alertness and timeliness not only on defense, but also on transition. Parkway fell to 2-9.
The Jets amassed 17 steals at Parkway (a season high) and passed for 15 assists, with a number of hustle plays that paid off:
—Nick Neuenschwander, who had a career-high seven takeaways, pulled off his first at 5:12 of the opening quarter when he dashed half-court for a layup on a goal-tending call that created the only lead change of the night, 4-3.
—There was no steal on this play, but budding 6-6 sophomore Isaac Schultz caught an inbounds pass under the AC bucket for a four-foot score that consumed about two seconds, putting the score at 10-5.
—A speedy pass in the lane by Micah McClure, son of the coach, to Ethan Brown led to an open layup by E.B. to make it 12-8.
—Braysen Yergler made a resounding rebound defensively, then whizzed downcourt for a contested layup and an 18-11 lead.
—A Brown lay-in at three seconds in the second period gave the visiting Adams Countians a 22-11 halftime edge. The Jets had eight steals in the first half.
—In the third period, AC’s top performer, 6-5 junior Ethan Poling, managed a strong layup with two defenders sandwiching him for a 27-11 lead.
—Neuenschwander caught up to a loose ball at 3:10 of the third quarter and turned it into a half-court, one-on-none layup drill and a 29-17 score.
—Ryan Tester pulled off a fourth stanza steal and ran three-fourths of the way downcourt for another layup at 7:29 (36-22).
—The best play of the night for Central ended at 5:46 of the final period when three sharp, quick passes around the perimeter brought a rifle-shot feed to wide-open Brown for a point-blank deuce and a 40-22 margin.
—Late in the fourth quarter, Tester used his football skills to make a leaping interception of a Parkway pass.
—Poling helped wrap up the “W” with two free throws at 2:36 to create a 46-27 advantage. He’s nearing 90% on FTs after making better than 80% over the last half of last season.
—Neuenschwander, who had the game’s first steal, also had its last as he nabbed the spheroid and went 42-feet for a layup that put the score at 50-29.
The Jets will play Jay County at home on Saturday, then play the Patriots again next Tuesday when the annual Allen County Athletic Conference tournament starts — boys play first, then the girls.
