Delta’s Braden Samuels stole the show Thursday at the Barry Weaver Natatorium at Jay County High School, breaking the sectional record in the 100 free and coming in under the state cut times in the same event and the 50 free. Samuels broke the record held by Andrew Torres, also from Delta, of 46.24 in the 2017 Sectional. The time also broke the pool record at Jay County.
Adams Central had an excellent preliminary night, finishing third in the 200 free relay and within two seconds of top seed Delta. The swimming Jets also finished second in the 400 free relay, but will have to make up four seconds on Delta and their anchor, Braden Samuels.
The top eight in each event will compete in Saturday’s finals after the 15 divers finish up their portion of the meet in the morning.
Bellmont’s only finalist was exchange student Bosco Barrero, who qualified for the final eight in the IM, the breaststroke. Barrero was also the anchor in the 400 free relay that finished sixth.
For the Starfish, the 200 medley relay team finished sixth but Trey Lehman just missed the cut in the 50, finishing ninth. Zach Herman came in fourth in the 100 fly, while Aidan Von Gunten qualified for the final swim in the 100 free.
