Van Wert fair approaching

    With Labor Day weekend rapidly approaching, it’s almost time for the annual Van Wert County Fair. The 159th fair will begin its five-day run Wednesday.
    Prior to the fair’s official opening, country-rock superstar Charlie Daniels will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday in front of the grandstand. Tickets are available for $45, $35, $30 and $25 at the fair office or online at
    Other grandstand events scheduled during the fair include:
    • Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. — Calf scamble
    • Sept. 3 and Sept. 7 at  7 p.m. — Harness racing
    • Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. — Truck and tractor pull
    • Sept. 5 at 9:30 a.m. — Cheerleading competition
    • Sept. 5 at 5 p.m. — Figure 8 Demo racing
    • Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. — Motocross
    • Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. — Tug a Truck
    • Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. — Demolition derby
    • Sept. 7 at noon — Derby Day horse racing
    Livestock judging, both 4-H and open senior classes, will be held throughout the fair. Entertainment will be featured daily at the Gospel Pavilion and the Free Entertainment tent.
    Sept. 3 is Veterans and Senior Citizen Day, free admission.
      Persons age 8 and younger are admitted free to the fair each day. Season tickets are available for $20 and youth season tickets may be purchased for $5. Single person admission for visitors age 16 and older is $6. Children aged 9-15 will be admitted for $3 if with a parent who pays full price.
    Visitors will be admitted to the fairgrounds on Sept. 1 at no charge.
